Craft Group - December 2020
Civid19, tier 3 brought its own disappointments; however, the craft group did not let the grass grow, and set about making Angels. Packaged in their own little bubble, along with a Christmas card, and next year’s programme the committee distributed the Guardian Angles to every member. Inside the Angels “bubble” was this lovely verse:
Guardian Angel
This angle comes with love and joy
And full of Christmas Cheer
With hope that we can all meet up
Sometime in the New Year.
Put me on your Christmas tree.
Then keep me safe until
This dreaded virus goes away
As we all pray it will.

Garden Group - End Of Year, November 2020
Covid19 ensured we were unable to go out for our customary end of season meal, so a Zoom meeting was called. It was nearing Halloween and instead of donning our glad rags, the dress code was “scary”. Festooned as witches, ghouls and ghost the group looked a picture. The pumpkins and alternatives were as expected of such a talented bunch of folks, a brilliant display.
To round of the year, we took a walk around Darley Park to enjoy the changing colours of the leaves while getting drenched into the bargain. Well it really wouldn’t be the garden group if it didn’t rain. Would we have done this as individuals, absolutely not, but as part of the WI, for the company and comradeship, Yes.

Garden Group - October 2020
Not being one for letting the weather get us down, and with Storm Alex on the way, several ladies decided a walk around Markeaton Park and a picnic would break the monotony of the Covid19 regulations that rule our lives these days. Donned in wet weather and warm gear, especially Lucile, the walk and picnic was lovely. Alex was indeed very kind to us and held off till we left for home.
Garden Group - September 2020
Making the most of the glorious September weather, just a few of the Garden Group visited Kedleston Hall. The cornish pasties and scones were delicious (I must say each person didn't have both a scone and a pastie). Last time we only ventured on the Short walk, this time we opted for the Long Walk, and needed to take a breather under the trees, as indeed it was a Long Walk, but a lovely day out with great company.
Garden Group - August 2020
1st August 2020, the garden group got together for the first time since March. Complying with Government guideline, social distancing and assembling outside in small groups (in Lucille's garden), it was so nice to see each other in person. However, it wouldn't really be a WI sub group meeting without tea and delicious cake - thank you Lucille.
Garden Group - July 2020 (No.3)
The Garden Group was making up for lost time as restrictions and regulations were being relaxed, this would be our third outing in July. The National Trust was proving to be invaluable even if it did mean getting up at the crack of dawn on the Friday before a visit to book a place; the venue Kedleston Hall. Another lovely day out, the wildflower meadows were incredible, lunch was pretty good too, the Cornish pasties and scones went down a treat, and the short walk completed our day.
Garden Group - July 2020 (No.2)
As the Covid19 lockdown eased, several members of the Mickleover WI Garden Group, and Guinness the dog, ventured forth yet again to visit the Hydrangea collection at Darley Park. It had been shown on Gardens World the previous evening (17th July 2020), and was a repeat, as on physical viewing, the hydrangeas needed some TLC. This was the first day the collection had been open and the volunteers were doing their best to catch up on months of neglect. Saying that, there were some lovely specimens and what better than to wander around one of Derby’s jewels on a Saturday morning.
Garden Group - July 2020 (No.1)
As Government guidelines were starting to relax, a few members of the garden group ventured out to Calke Abbey on Monday 6th July. We met on the grassy knoll outside the café, enjoyed a picnic, followed by a walk round the gardens. It was so nice to get out and walk around such lovely surroundings. As the weather had been kind to us, we visited the café, to support local business of course, before departing separately for home. Fingers crossed there will soon be many more trips.
Garden Group - March 2020
Before lock-down was about to be imposed by Government as Coronavirus continued to take over our lives, members of the garden group visited Felley Priory on Wednesday 18th March. In true garden group style it rained the whole time, although we are a hardy lot and are not troubled by being soaked in the pursuit of seeing the daffodil spectacular. The café was completely void of any other visitors and being the only customers, we enjoyed great service and a delicious lunch. We are all hoping it won’t be too long before we can enjoy more days out like this.
Craft Group's Recent Activities - 2020
What do you do with 80 balls of string which are destined for the tip? The Craft Group have been busy crocheting eleven string bags for putting green-grocery items in, which are free of one-use plastic wrapping. Three are already in use for this purpose.
February saw us making felt heart lavender bags and March tissue holders. These were all made from materials we already had so this could turn out to be our recycling year. No money spent - yippee! and a few drawers emptied. What's not to like.
March Meeting 2020
Despite the doom and gloom of Coronavirus, the Mickleover WI March meeting went ahead and we thoroughly enjoyed an evening of Country Dancing with Daryl, accompanied by Brain on the accordion. Although not so spritely, we managed to follow Daryl’s instructions and danced the light fandango, to the amusement of dancers and spectators!
Garden Group - February 2020
Monday 17th February; a few members of the Garden Group visited Hopton Hall for the snowdrops, and planned to have lunch at the Miners Arms. It was £5 per person to walk around the grounds of the Hall, which was somewhat disappointing, and the Miners Arms didn't open on a Monday or Tuesday! On our way back to Derby we stopped off at Brailsford Church yard which was delightful, and at no cost.
Garden Group – January 2020
Four members of the garden group decided to go to the Melbourne Hall and Gardens Special Winter Opening on Sunday 5th January. We were greeted with a glass of mulled wine and a tiny mince pie (it might have only been teeny but it was jolly tasty), and a browse around the lower part of the hall before venturing into the gardens. There wasn’t a lot going on, but we wandered over to see the alpacas, miniature horses, goats, hens and rabbits. Obviously, the gardens weren’t looking their best, but it was good to get out in the fresh air.
New Year Meal - January 2020
The New Year meal at Mickleover Golf Club on Saturday 4th January, was as usual, a delicious affair; lovely starters, mains included turkey, lamb, cod and a vegetarian option served along with lashing of vegetables, and yummy deserts (trio of cheesecake, Christmas pudding & a cheese board). I think everyone enjoyed the evening even if a few lbs were added to the hips.
